Best Pickaxe in Terraria

Finding the best Pickaxe in Terraria is essential if you are looking to succeed in the game. But because of their sheer number, choosing the correct Pickaxe can be tricky. In this article, we will look at the best Pickaxe for surviving the Hardmode in Terraria.

The best Pickaxes for Hardmode in Terraria are powerful and very destructive and tend to have a superior range. However, their mining speed and knockback are pretty average. According to our list, they include all the variants of Luminite Pickaxe, Picksaw, Shroomite Digging Claw, and Pickaxe Axe. In the below 200 power category, the Titanium Pickaxe is your best bet.

There are 31 Pickaxe in Terraria, 15 of which are Hardmode-exclusive. As you might know, Hardmode is a difficult phase of the game, unlocked after the Wall of Flesh boss is defeated.

Expect stronger and deadly monsters, but there are also new mine ores to explore. You will certainly need the best Pickaxe to mount a good challenge and succeed in Hardmode.

The Best Pickaxe in Terraria

There are 4 key things you need to look at when choosing the best Pickaxe in Terraria. These include Pickaxe power, damage, range, and mining speed. Based on this criterion, we present the best Pickaxe in Terraria for Hardmode.

1. Luminite Pickaxe

If you are looking for the strongest Pickaxe in Terraria, Luminite fits the bill perfectly well. Luminite Pickaxe boasts 225 pickaxe power and 80 melee damage. These are the highest pickaxe power and melee damage you can find in Terraria. The mining speed of 8 is average, but the impressive coverage makes up for it. Again, the knockback rate of 5 is not very impressive but still decent.

There are 4 variants of the Luminite Pickaxe; Nebula, Stardust, Vortex, and Solar Flare. All of them have similar features and functionality but differ in aesthetics. To craft Luminite based Pickaxe, you need their respective Frags (Nebula, Stardust, etc.) and Luminite Bars.

Unlocking the strongest Pickaxe in Terraria is not a walk in the park as you would imagine. You will need to defeat the final Boss of the game (Lord Moon) to access Luminite bars for crafting Luminite Pickaxe.

2. Picksaw

Picksaw is another amazing Pickaxe in Terraria. With a 210 pickaxe power, it is the second overall in pickaxe power rating. But it also boasts axe power, which most of its counterparts, including Luminite Pickaxe, don’t have. In fact, out of 31 Pickaxe in Terraria, only Picksaw, Pick Axe, and Shroomite Digging Claw have ax power. And that is one of the reasons all of them made the list.

Picksaw provides 34 melee damage, a far cry from the 80 that Luminite Pickaxe offers, but still decent overall. Its mining speed and range are just above average. But these can be overlooked considering the power and diversity it brings on board. And the fact that it can mine all blocks speaks volumes.

For you to unlock Pickaxe, you have to defeat Plantera during Hardmode. You can then summon Golem for a fight, and if you defeat him, he will drop Picksaw from the underground jungle. Because the drop rate is just 25%, you might have to try more than once.

You can use Picksaw as a 3-in-1 tool to chop down trees, mine blocks, and fight creatures. This makes it an essential asset both for early and late games.

3. Shroomite Digging Claw

Shroomite Digging Claw is among the 4 Pickaxe in Terraria with a pickaxe power rating of 200. At 45 melee damage, it’s only second to Luminite Pickaxe in terms of potential damage to the target. Its use time rating of 12 is the best, making it the fastest Pickaxe in Terraria. Again, it is among the few Pickaxes in Terraria with ax power.

It is, therefore, fast, powerful, and versatile, a combination that many players will find hard to ignore. Its range is probably the lowest, but because it acts swiftly, you will still be able to cover much ground.

You can craft it using chlorophyte bars and Glowing mushrooms. But like most of the Pickaxe in this list, you have to beat Plantera to unlock it.

4. Pickaxe Axe

Pickaxe Axe boasts a power rating of 200, ax power of 110, and melee damage of 35. It is powerful and diverse, meaning it can get a lot done easily. However, its knockback range, mining speed, and coverage are all average, so some people might prefer Spectre Pickaxe.

If you can forfeit the impressive ax power, Spectre is arguably your best choice if you are to choose between the two. It has a better range (+3), superior knockback (5.25), and a faster mining speed (10).

To unlock Pickaxe Axe, you need to defeat all the 3 mechanical bosses. It can be crafted using 18 Hallowed bars, 1 soul of might, 1 soul of fright, and 1 soul of sight.

5. Titanium Pickaxe

If you are looking at the under 200 pickaxe power category, Titanium Pickaxe is probably the best you can get. Its pickaxe power rating of 190 and melee damage of 27 is the best in that category. Its mining speed of 7 is the lowest in its category but still above most of the Pickaxe in the 200+ range. You can use it to mine all blocks except the Lihzahrd Bricks and Chlorophyte Ore.

Conclusion

Terraria is, by all standards, a complicated game, but things get even more challenging in Hardmode. The tools discussed above will come in handy as you fight strong and ferocious opponents while mining new ores.

Any of the Pickaxes in the list is worth its salt, so you don’t have to wait until you unlock Luminite. You can start with Titanium Pickaxe, which is the best in the under 20-category as you make your way up. As you might have realized, the strongest Pickaxe in Terraria is effective and ideal for the mid and end game.
